GSA accepts $3.275 million bid for former Battin Federal Building
On May 13, 2013, GSA accepted the top bid of $3.275 million for the former US James F. Battin U.S. Courthouse in Billings, MT, moving this excess federal property one step closer to a sale and off of the government’s books. The first bid was submitted on April 23, for $113 and 20 days later, concluded with a final bid offer of $3.275 million. The successful bidder has 5 days from the closing date to provide an additional deposit to move the sale process forward. Region 7 buildings win Federal Green Challenge Award
R7 Federal Buildings, Centre Phase 5 and A. Maceo Smith, in Dallas, TX, have been selected as 2013 Federal Green Challenge awardees. Centre Phase 5 was awarded for highest regional improvement in energy reduction, and A. Maceo Smith was awarded for highest regional improvement in water reduction. Much of the recent success in these arenas, including this award, can be attributed to the Building Green Teams, made up of tenant representatives in the buildings and GSA. There are currently nine active Building Green Teams and eight additional green teams that have just started in Region 7.
Historic building in region 7 wins multiple awards in sustainability
The Hipolito F. Garcia Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in San Antonio, TX, has won many awards over the past year. The building recently won the “Best of Downtown” award in the sustainability category by the Downtown Alliance San Antonio on April 11. The Downtown Alliance San Antonio is a non-profit organization dedicated to making downtown San Antonio a better place to live, work, eat and play. The building also won the Environmental Design Construction 2013 Design Excellence Award in the Institutional/Government Category as well as the EPA National Energy Star Buildings Award, ranking Number 9 out of a field of over 3,000 schools, businesses and government buildings. Built in 1937, the building is a six-story, neo-classical, Beaux-Arts style federal building with over 230,000 rentable square feet and recently went through a modernization project with numerous features for more efficient operations and savings.
Region 7’s helps expand opportunities for HUBZone small businesses
Acting Regional Administrator Sylvia Hernandez recently spoke at the HUBZone Small Business Summit in Dallas, Texas. The event, hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency, was attended by over 250 representatives from small businesses. Acting Administrator Hernandez spoke about GSA’s mission and priorities with a focus on “Expanding Opportunities for Small Businesses.” Her speech also included a powerpoint presentation that showed GSA’s small business goals including the achievements of FY 2012 and FY 2013 to date. Other speakers included the Regional Administrator from the Small Business Administration and representatives from EPA, Veterans Administration, Health and Human Services, Treasury Department and US Representative Marc Veasey. The afternoon sessions were dedicated to match-making sessions between small business owners and federal agency’s small business representatives.
Greater Southwest Region honors Earth Day
Region 7, along with federal partners, local businesses and the City of Fort Worth, hosted a day of training and educational activities to honor Earth Day. The event, held on April 23, started with the presentation of colors by the Paralyzed Veterans of America and welcome address by Sylvia Hernandez, Acting Regional Administrator, Colonel Charles Klinge, Corps of Engineers and Julia McCleeary, City of Fort Worth. The event was open to the public with opportunities for everyone including sustainability displays, educational short films, a farmers market, landscape tour and a panel discussion with sustainability leaders. The panel shared how private industry and municipal government’s see sustainability in the future. Region 7 also collected old tennis shoes throughout the week to be recycled and repurposed in the local community. The goal of the event was to teach people how to be more sustainable at home and at work.
