477 Michigan Avenue
Detroit, MI  48226-2523

The Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building, designed in the Brutalist style of reinforced concrete with repeating motifs, opened in downtown Detroit in 1976. Named for former U.S. Senator Patrick Vincent McNamara, who served in Congress from 1955-66, the building features nearly one million square feet of rentable space and occupies the full city block bound by Howard and Second streets and Cass and Michigan avenues.

The most recent GSA Tenant Satisfaction Survey (2012) reported 67% of the building's tenants are more than satisfied with the building and GSA services (rating of four or higher on a five-point scale).

In 2007 and 2008, the McNamara facility was the recipient of a Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Government Office Building of the Year (TOBY) Award, and it has earned ENERGY STAR® designations every year since 2008.

Recovery Act Project Update Recovery Act-funded modernization work on the McNamara Federal Building includes an FBI office build-out of eight floors and the addition of an FBI dedicated entry, conferencing center, mailroom, and exercise areas. The public lobby will also be rebuilt to alleviate congestion, and the emergency generator and fire alarm system are being replaced. The project started in August 2010 and will last nearly four years.

Green Improvements
Energy-saving "green" elements of the project include installing insulation around lobbies and entryways to prevent energy loss, replacing toilets with low-flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water usage, and installing high-efficiency lighting with occupancy sensors.

Building Access and Parking The public should use the back entrance off Cass Avenue since the Michigan Avenue entrance is closed during Recovery Act project construction. The building is open to the public 8 a.m.– 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (except federal holidays). All visitors must submit to security screening and present a valid identification card (such as a state driver’s license or federal ID) to enter the building. Weapons, ammunition, pointed items, aerosols, alcohol, hand tools, and hardware are prohibited.

Detroit People Mover station delivers riders across from the building on Cass Avenue. Two-hour parking is available in metered spaces near the building, while adjacent surface lots offer public parking for $5-10 per day.

To arrange permission to utilize the McNamara Federal Plaza for public communication, please complete GSA Form 3453 and submit it to the Property Management Office, Rm. 115, 477 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48226.
