Varnado Named Acting FAS Commissioner
GSA acting Administrator James Williams named Tyree Varnado as acting commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service, effective Sept. 21, 2008. Varnado was named to this new position following Williams' announcement that acting FAS Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner Barnaby Brasseux would assume the role of GSA deputy administrator.
As acting FAS commissioner, Varnado was responsible for leading the delivery of approximately $48 billion of best-value services, products and solutions to federal customers that increase overall government effectiveness and efficiency. Varnado also provided leadership to FAS’ 4,000 employees.
Since 2002, Varnado had been the assistant regional administrator for FAS’ Greater Southwest Region, where he managed the region's FAS operations. These include the Central Fleet Program, Marketing, and Property Management within the Greater Southwest and Rocky Mountain Regions, and several significant and unique programs: the Greater Southwest Acquisition Center, the Southwest Supply Center, the Information Technology Governmentwide Acquisition Contracts Center, and the Fleet Payment Processing Center.
Varnado retired from GSA in 2010, after 39 years of federal service.
