Details: | Removing Asbestos-Containing (Vat) And Mastic REMOVING ASBESTOS-CONTAINING (VAT) AND MASTIC THIS PROCEDURE MUST BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH 02080-01-R "PROCEDURES FOR REMOVING ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIALS". IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS, PRECAUTIONS, EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR ASBESTOS ABATEMENT. PART 1---GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. This procedure includes guidance on removing asbestos-containing vinyl asbestos tile (VAT) and mastic. PART 2---PRODUCTS [Refer to 02080-01-R] PART 3---EXECUTION 3.01 ERECTION, INSTALLATION, APPLICATION A. Use water-wetted, non-mechanical removal methods (hand spudding) and promptly remove loosened material from the floor. Continuous wetting of loosened material is not a substitute for immediate removal, containment and disposal. B. If air monitoring indicates airborne levels at or above 0.05 fibers per cubic centimeter, an approved amended water solution, utilized in accordance with the manufacturers directions, shall immediately be substituted for water wetting at the direction of the Contracting Officer s Representative. C. Remove all loosened materials immediately from floor areas including floor tile, mastic and wood subfloor and place in burlap bags. Then insert filled burlap bags into 6-mil plastic bags. Filled plastic bag shall be placed into covered dumpsters or other covered portable containers lined with 6-mil polyethylene located on the same floor. Dispose of removed material as asbestos waste. D. Remove plywood subfloor using power tools as required. Perform power cutting while inside negative pressure enclosure. E. Limits of Removal: 1. Tile and mastic shall be removed only from the rooms and areas indicated. 2. The vinyl asbestos tile and asbestos-containing mastic shall be removed from each floor or feature indicated to a distance indicated. DO NOT CUT TILES, EXCEPT ALONG EDGES OF THE WALLS TO REMAIN. 3. The Contractor shall remove all partial (non-whole) pieces of tile and mastic. 4. Remaining tiles shall abut against the other remaining tiles on at least two sides. 5. Asbestos-containing mastic shall be removed by solvents approved by the Contracting Officer. The surface where mastic is removed shall be sprayed with an approved encapsulant. 6. The Contractor shall take all precautions that the tile remaining after the abatement is secure and completely fastened to the floor. All loose tiles to remain must be re-cemented and secured.
