DFC Wins Gold Environmental Leadership Program Award

Environmental Leadership Program LogoIn 2007, GSA became a Silver Leader in the State of Colorado’s Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) and since has had its eye on getting the gold.  ELP is a statewide environmental recognition and reward program run by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Division of Environmental Health and Sustainability.

Additional sustainable practices lead GSA to receiving a Gold ELP. For example, GSA is about to implement a centralized intelligent irrigation system. The agency will be able to monitor and meter irrigation and adjust watering to meet demands and minimize loss. GSA expects to save approximately 30% of the irrigation needs. Something a little more visible to tenants is that the ten largest campus buildings received green lobby monitors that deliver real-time campus energy and water performance information, allowing everyone to be more aware of how the campus is performing.

GSA is responsible for managing the one-square mile Denver Federal Center, giving the agency a significant opportunity to integrate sustainable practices. In 2004, GSA started a sustainability and environmental management system at the DFC and completed its first full “plan, do, check, act” cycle in 2007. That system includes a set of processes and practices that enabled GSA to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. That was the first step towards the DFC receiving a Silver ELP.

There is a lot of focus today on making products, services, and business practices more sustainable. GSA's broad reach over the acquisition, management, and disposal of federal assets provides a unique opportunity to influence the environmental performance of the entire government.
