Working Together

In the event of disaster situations in the United States, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) must be ready to spring into action. And when FEMA mobilizes, GSA is not far behind, using their expertise to secure bases of operation for the agency as quickly as possible.

So when Superstorm Sandy slammed into the East Coast, leaving a path of destruction in its wake, it became clear that FEMA would require a significant presence in New York and New Jersey. One of our leasing specialists vacationing in Florida, cut his vacation short and made his way to our Region 4 office in Atlanta. There, he worked with colleagues from New York, Ohio, and Colorado in securing FEMA Joint Field Operation (JFO) facilities for immediate recovery operations.

JFO facilities are FEMA’s first step in disaster recovery: a local base of operations for coordination with local officials in sharing information, establishing priorities, and allocating resources. Our Leasing Division helped FEMA set up 2 JFOs within a week of the disaster. And when FEMA moved in to the JFO’s, our realty specialists had mobilized to assist in procuring the many field locations that would be necessary over the coming months.

An expedited leasing process allows FEMA to secure space in a short period of time, and GSA was able to quickly secure eight additional leases that allowed FEMA to operate locally in the hardest hit areas of Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island, and New Jersey.

As FEMA continues their important work in the long and arduous Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts, GSA will be there to provide support and expertise. Together, we hope to ease the burden placed on so many of our colleagues and friends in neighboring communities.
