Little Egg Harbor Schools Receive Excess Federal Computers

Computers For Learning Program Helps Sandy-impacted Schools

New York City – Under a special initiative to help local area schools impacted by Super Storm Sandy, the U.S. General Services Administration has facilitated the donation of 47 laptops and 73 monitors, all excess federal computer equipment valued at more than $81,000 (original acquisition cost) to the Little Egg Harbor School District in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, one of the areas hit hard by the storm.  The school district’s George J. Mitchell Elementary School was visited recently by GSA Regional Administrator Denise L. Pease, joined by a representative from Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo’s office, to see the equipment being used by the students and to meet with them.
 
This initiative, spearheaded by GSA’s Northeast and Caribbean Region, is an outgrowth of the agency’s Computers For Learning Program that allows government agencies to donate no longer needed computers and equipment to schools and some educational nonprofit organizations.  Since this special initiative began GSA has donated more than $464,000 in computer equipment to storm-impacted schools and anticipates that there will be additional donations to other schools in the area.  
 
“There are many schools in our local area that suffered losses as a result of Super Storm Sandy.  It gives us great pleasure to be able to help these schools through this program. In this era of ever decreasing budgets, the Computers for Learning Program is one way schools and other qualifying organizations can obtain equipment without having to expend precious resources," said GSA Regional Administrator Denise L. Pease.  "I am very proud of GSA's role in supporting this program, especially this initiative to help Sandy impacted schools. We have been making an extra effort to get the word out to schools in our regional area so that they may take advantage of it."

Frank LoBiondo.  “Ensuring that New Jersey students are using technology every school day to improve their education experience will help lay the foundation for bright futures for each of them.”
 
Because federal agencies periodically refresh their computer equipment, gently used laptops that are no longer needed by the government are donated to schools that have registered under GSA’s Computers for Learning Program.  Under this special effort to support schools that suffered losses due to Storm Sandy, equipment is being received in the area from other GSA Regions helping to support the initiative.  The laptops donated to the Little Egg Harbor School District were actually provided by GSA’s New England Region, headquartered in Boston, Mass.  
 
The Computers for Learning Program is one of several federal initiatives that help to support President Barack Obama's commitment to education by allowing government agencies to donate surplus computers and related equipment to schools and qualifying nonprofit educational organizations.  The program, established by former President Bill Clinton under Executive Order 12999, helps make computer technology an integral part of every classroom and encourages the use of innovative educational software.
 
While federal agencies are able to donate the equipment directly to schools, GSA helps facilitate the process by sponsoring the Computers for Learning website (www.computersforlearning.gov).  Schools and eligible organizations are able to register at the site and can then browse through the available equipment that is posted there.  Schools located in areas impacted by Super Storm Sandy can currently include that information in their registration for the program.
 
Since it was established the Computers for Learning Program has provided tens of thousands of excess computer equipment to thousands of eligible schools and organizations across the United States.  In addition to supporting innovation and technology in education, the program also helps support sustainability initiatives by helping to reuse equipment and reduce electronic waste.  By some estimates, reusing just one computer prevents 30 lbs of hazardous waste and 77 lbs of solid waste from entering landfills, and prevents over 17 gallons of water and 32 tons of air from being polluted.
