WASHINGTON — Today, the U.S. government’s official web portal, USA.gov, operated by the U.S. General Services Administration, launched Notifications.USA.gov, giving the public easy access to real-time updates on topics ranging from food recalls to weather emergencies. As part of USA.gov, the federal government’s one-stop gateway to information from federal, state, and local governments, this new menu allows visitors to sort, search, and select updates in a single location, and sign-up to have updates on topics of interest delivered to their computer desktop, smart phone, or other device.
“Whether it be food safety recalls, weather warnings, or the latest information on government initiatives, the public’s need for information from their government continues to grow,” said David McClure, Associate Administrator of GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies. “By putting real-time notifications at citizens’ fingertips or in the palm of their hand, we have created a way for agencies to provide critical information that citizens want in ways that they want it.”
This new notifications menu already includes more than 7,000 updates covering 6,200 topics from across 144 federal agencies and offices. Citizens can sign up to receive ongoing updates on topics of interest and have them delivered via e-mail, text, or RSS feeds. Any federal agency can add feeds or e-mail notifications to the menu.
An unpublicized beta test of the service that began in mid-August generated 12,000 subscriptions across 74 of the participating agencies, with the highest level of public interest occurring in areas of health, economy, energy, education, and agriculture.
Notifications.USA.gov complements USA.gov’s recently upgraded, more powerful search function. USA.gov provides information from and links to more than 10,000 pages of federal, state, and local government information about topics such as obtaining student loans, getting the best child care, finding licensing regulations for small business, applying for a passport or visa, and more.
In July, USA.gov marked its 10th anniversary by debuting unprecedented citizen access with the launch of its revamped site featuring increased usability, new mobile applications for on-the-go instant access, and the fastest, most-comprehensive search function for government information.
GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies also provides helpful information to the public through its Spanish-language website, GobiernoUSA.gov, Kids, gov, Pueblo.gsa.gov, and Consumeraction.gov. GSA’s Federal Citizen Information Center provides phone access to the public at 800-FED-INFO, free publications, and other programs. GSA facilitates more than 245 million instances of public engagement each year.
GSA’s mission to provide superior workplaces, expert technology solutions, acquisition services, purchasing and E-Gov travel solutions and management policies, at best value, allows federal agencies to focus on their core missions.
