Amenities
We oversee and improve the effectiveness of tenant buildings’:
For information regarding amenities in a specific building, contact the building manager.
Credit unions
We may provide space to credit unions [PDF] to offer banking services in some of our buildings, including retail banking and ATMs.
Food service operations: cafeterias and vending facilities
We follow the Department of Health and Human Services’ Food Service Guidelines for Federal Facilities to provide healthier food in our cafeterias and vending facilities to improve nutritional health and reduce impact on the environment. These Guidelines translate the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) into clear and definitive standards that food service operators can follow to make their operations healthier and more sustainable.
You may use the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) food guidance system My Plate for healthy food planning options.
Fitness centers & health and wellness
Agencies should incorporate health and wellness improvements such as readily available food options and on-site health and fitness facilities into their annual budgets. We are contributing to this effort by promoting healthy food options and regular physical activity, rating buildings through our Fitwel system.
Fitness centers
An agency can choose (under 5 U.S.C.§7901) to establish and operate physical fitness programs and facilities designed to promote and maintain employee health, which we will help build out within agency-controlled space. We can also assist in establishing a joint facility for use by multiple agencies.
We can help agencies consider:
- Space needs and cost
- Equipment needs, maintenance, and cleaning
- Fitness center management
- Access to fitness centers, locker rooms, and showers

Health and wellness
To support the well-being of federal employees, we have implemented health and wellness programs.
Consider the stairs
We encourage employees, tenants, and visitors of federally owned and leased buildings to step up to a healthier lifestyle by taking the stairs to help reduce risk for several diseases and health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Fitwel
Fitwel, a building health and wellness rating system administered and implemented by the Center for Active Design assesses workplace designs (i.e., stairwells and outdoor spaces) and policies (i.e., indoor clean air standards and healthy food standards) shown to impact occupant health and wellness.
The Fitwel certification [XLSX - 28 KB] offers a third-party reviewed, benchmarking process and identifies strategies that support continuous improvement to maximize occupant health, well-being, and productivity in GSA-owned buildings.
The rating system is currently available to private-sector organizations and any other landholding agency.
Health units
Employee health units are a key component of a work-site wellness program. They deliver health services that are necessary for maintaining and improving employee health and wellness.
Lactation space support
Employers must provide lactation support for employees through (1) a reasonable break time to express breast milk for her nursing child for 1 year after the child’s birth each time such employee has need to express milk; and (2) a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public which may be used by the employee to express breast milk.
