USCIS Philadelphia District Office opens first combined LEED Platinum facility in the world
The Philadelphia District Office of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which serves as the gateway to America for thousands of immigrants, celebrated the grand opening of the new environmentally friendly building in the University City neighborhood of West Philadelphia on January 28.
The facility is the first in the world to achieve both LEED Platinum Certification under the LEED 2009 for Commercial Interiors Rating System as well as LEED Platinum Certification for the base building, Core and Shell, under the LEED v2.0 Rating System for Core and Shell Development. The facility features solar panels, shading systems to reduce heat in the summer months, rainwater recycling, and a 20,000 square foot rooftop park. The building is also conveniently located near public transportation and has onsite bicycle racks and changing rooms to encourage sustainable transportation for USCIS employees.
GSA Regional Administrator Sara-Manzano Diaz provided remarks on the building features and the fostered partnerships that were necessary for the buildings successful completion. Sara thanked the project team and project partners by stating, “GSA’s goal of making this facility sustainable while also providing a wonderful workspace that will allow CIS employees to focus on their mission critical work was achieved. We at GSA are proud of this project and you our partners for making this project a success. We would not have accomplished so much if it wasn’t for your support.”

GSA Partners with Youth Service, Inc. for Annual Holiday Giving Trees at Philadelphia Federal Buildings
Over the last several years, GSA Building Managers Pam Pollard, Tom Rufo, and Nancy Wilkinson, have partnered with Youth Service, Inc. (YSI), to host annual Holiday Giving Trees at the James A. Byrne U.S. Courthouse and William J. Green Federal Building federal complex and U.S. Custom House in Philadelphia, PA.
Youth Service, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has provided immediate shelter and support services to Philadelphia’s children, youth and families for over 60 years. YSI reaches more than 5,000 clients annually, the majority of whom live below the poverty level.
Each year, GSA places a holiday giving tree in the main lobbies of the Byrne Green federal complex and U.S. Custom House, filled with gift tags for people in need. Tenants provide gifts, which YSI distributes to their clients.
The tree is popular with federal tenants, and was an overwhelming success in 2013:
- Gifts were provided to 17 local families, including 57 children
- Gifts were also given to 30 teens at local shelters
