Secure Flight Traveler Pre-Screening

The Secure Flight Traveler Pre-Screening Program requires domestic airlines to collect and transmit the full names and itineraries of travelers to the Transportation Security Agency (TSA).

TSA plans a phased-in approach to the implementation of the Secure Flight Pre-Screening Program which will eventually match the name, date of birth and gender information for each passenger against government watch lists to:

  • Identify known and suspected terrorists
  • Prevent individuals on the No Fly List from boarding an aircraft
  • Identify individuals on the Selectee List for enhanced screening
  • Facilitate passenger air travel
  • Protect individuals' privacy

Privacy

In addition, no personal information will be collected other than what is necessary and relevant for the purposes of watch list matching. After matching passenger information against government watch lists, Secure Flight transmits the matching results back to aircraft operators.

Secure Flight defines the individual's full name as it appears on the verifying ID held by the individual. Be advised that travelers should ensure that the data provided when making a reservation exactly matches the document the traveler will use for identification purposes at check-in.

The program is managed by the Department of Homeland Security's TSA and requires collaboration with GSA, the airlines, E-Gov Travel Service vendors, travel management centers, online booking engine suppliers and global distribution systems in order to ensure implementation.
