Constructed in 1932, the 12-story U.S. Custom House in Chicago is currently used as office space, primarily for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Located in the Near West Side community of Chicago, southwest of the central business district, the Custom House is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Building Projects Three projects were recently completed, including a plaza repair project, penthouse tuckpointing, and installation of BuildingLink. BuildingLink provides computerized data regarding the building's operating systems and shows opportunities for saving energy.

Public Hours and Access The building is open to the public 7 a.m.– 6 p.m. Monday through Friday (except federal holidays). All visitors must undergo security screening and present a valid identity card (such as a state driver's license or federal ID) before gaining access to the building.

Art in Architecture Winter Vista, the artwork installed in the Custom House, was created by artist Karl Eugene Fortess, best known for his work as an educator.
