Electronic Toll Collection Systems

Many states offer electronic passes that can be mounted in vehicles to automatically pay tolls each time the vehicle passes through a toll booth. Encrypted account information is read by sensors at the toll plaza, and the appropriate amount is deducted from the linked prepaid or billing account.

These systems can help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce time spent in commuting. Additionally, they increase fuel economy, and reduce vehicle emissions by reducing the time spent in lines at toll booths.

There you can access information on how to set up an account. Some systems can be used for toll roads in multiple states, such as the EZ-Pass system, which can be used in 14 states.

Participating states include California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.
