Peace Arch Border Crossing Earns 2012 Design Award

The newly constructed Peace Arch Land Port of Entry in Blaine, Washington, has earned a 2012 Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Northwest & Pacific Region.

The Peace Arch border crossing, originally built in 1976, was replaced in 2011 with a new, energy efficient facility to meet the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency’s mission. The energy efficient and environmentally sustainable features include a 21,699 square foot “green roof” designed to moderate temperatures and reduce water run-off. The project is also the first Land Port of Entry project to incorporate a revised exterior lighting design meant to reduce energy usage and light pollution.

The project received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design “Gold” certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It was also recognized with a GSA Design Excellence Honor Award for successfully balancing its architecture with the surrounding landscape environment including Peace Arch State Park. The border crossing is the busiest non-commercial land crossing west of Detroit’s Ambassador Bridge.

The AIA Merit Award was presented to the design firm of Bolin, Cywinski, Jackson (Seattle Office) and JE Dunn Construction, the general contractor, at the Transformation 2012 Conference in Tuscon, Arizona, in October. The award recognizes the project for design excellence. Learn more about GSA’s Design Excellence program.
