Denver Federal Center Celebrates Earth Week Showcasing Green Transit
The U.S General Services Administration will celebrate Earth Week on Wednesday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Denver Federal Center on Federal Park near Bicentennial Park. The public and campus tenants are welcome to learn more about how GSA is making unprecedented efforts to reduce its environmental impact through smarter transportation choices.
“Our agency is leveraging its portfolio to drive cost-saving, fuel efficient cars across the federal government. We’re replacing retired cars in our fleet with more fuel efficient cars which lead to a 15% increase in miles per gallon in fiscal year 2012, resulting in an estimated gasoline savings of 1.1 million gallons nationwide,” said Sue Damour, GSA Regional Administrator.
During the Earth Day celebration, GSA will display some of its federal hybrid cars along with a hydrogen fuel cell electric car on loan from the National Renewable Energy Department. Fuel cell cars can be two to three times more efficient than a regular gas powered car. Unlike conventional cars, they produce no harmful exhaust emissions. Federal employees will be welcome to test drive most of the cars on display.
Visitors will also be able to get information on a new campus public bike share program as well as a new light rail transit station. These offerings will allow GSA to better serve our more than 6,200 employees and contractors by enhancing access to more fuel efficient cars and public transit.
This summer, GSA will be launching a new form of public transportation - DFC b-cycle. GSA will offer six bike stations located at Buildings 20, 25, 41, 67, 810 and Gate 5 near the public transit station. We will have a combined fleet of 50 bikes as a clean and simple way to get around campus. This pilot program is open to all campus tenants free of charge for the current calendar year.
The Regional Transportation District already offers regional and local bus service to the campus, but starting April 26, a new light rail transit station will help encourage increased use of public transit. Join in the fun at station parties on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More details are available at www.rtd-denver.com.
GSA will continue to work on providing a sustainable community to its tenants and the surrounding community. Through a half-mile fitness trail with 12 workout stations, softball fields, Bi-Centennial park, public transportation, and more, the agency is committed not only to having a sustainable campus, but also supporting an active and healthy living for the tenants which results in an overall healthy community.
