GSA Accepts more than $3.2 Million Bid for Former Battin Federal Building

BILLINGS, MT -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) accepted the top bid of $3.275 million for the former US James F. Battin U.S. Courthouse in Billings, MT, today moving this excess federal property one step closer to a sale and off of the government’s books. The Obama Administration has set aggressive goals for using federal real estate assets more efficiently, and GSA has increased its efforts to help federal agencies identify unneeded properties and move them into the disposal process. Last year, GSA disposed of more than 100 excess properties.

“This building is the latest action in our efforts to get federal properties off our books while creating savings for taxpayers,” said Susan Damour, GSA Regional Administrator. “GSA remains committed to putting excess properties to new uses, helping us to deliver on our mission to provide better value to the American people.”

The online auction drew six bidders and concluded on May 13, 2013 at 1 p.m. Mountain Time. The successful bidder will now have 5 days to provide an additional deposit to move the sale process forward.  After the deposit is received, the transfer of title to the new owner will occur within approximately 60 days.

This building is a unique opportunity to acquire a significant building located in the Central Business District of Billings at 316 North 26th Street. The sale includes one office building of approximately 221,000 square feet on a nearly an acre lot. Interested bidders had to provide a $45,000 refundable registration deposit to register for the sale and to bid on the property. The building was originally constructed to serve as office and courthouse space and was continuously used as such until the completion of the new Billings Federal Courthouse.

Construction of the building was completed in 1965. The building is five stories and includes a mechanical penthouse, one main basement level, and a sub-basement, and a 56-car parking garage.
