GSA Ranked as One of the Best Places to Work in Federal Government

Effective leadership key to increased employees satisfaction

WASHINGTON – GSA, stewards of the federal workplace and the government’s premier provider of goods and services, is also one of the government’s top employers.  Today, the agency was recognized by the Partnership for Public Service as one of the Top 10 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government for the fifth straight time.

“This is a true testament to the work that GSA employees do day in, day out to help make government work better for the American people,” said GSA Administrator Martha Johnson. “It also shines a light on GSA’s leadership team, which has been instrumental in creating an employee-friendly culture that rewards innovation, values customer relationships, and is committed to operational excellence.”

The agency ranked eighth overall and received high marks in the areas of strategic management and performance-based awards where it ranked third among large agencies, and second in work/life balance and compensation.  The agency also received top-10 rankings in each of the following leadership categories: Management Fairness; Employee Empowerment, Supervisory Leadership, and Senior Leadership. In 12 of the 15 “Best in Class” scores, the agency scores increased over the previous survey, with an average score increase of 3.5.

“I am particularly pleased to see GSA’s ranking in strategic management, as we continue to leverage our position as the federal government’s procurement and real estate to assist other agencies in fulfilling their missions,” Johnson said.

The ranking, which is produced by the Partnership for Public Service and the American University’s Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation, is compiled from overall employee satisfaction data.  

The 2010 Best Places to Work rankings include 290 federal organizations and are based on response from more than 263,000 federal employees.
