WASHINGTON - The U.S. General Services Administration has hired contractors to perform environmental remediation at four locations on the 2,700-acre Lorton Correctional Facility in Fairfax County, Va.
Cleanup is under way at the three firing ranges and the closed landfill, which is situated north of Silverbrook Road. Fairfax County officials are working closely with GSA to insure that the remediation, expected to be complete by the end of 2001, fully protects human health and the environment.
At the same time, GSA also is completing its federal requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act and National Historic Preservation Act, with the ultimate goal of transferring the property to Fairfax County. In December, 1998, Congress directed GSA officials to clean up environmental contamination and transfer the bulk of the Lorton Correctional Facility consistent with a plan developed by Fairfax County. Under the county reuse plan, most of the property will be used for parks and recreation. GSA handles a large portion of federal property management and disposal.
