WASHINGTON - The U.S. General Services Administration announced today that the Department of Agriculture's National Finance Center (NFC) has become its 47th federal government client to use a contract with Comdisco for nationwide information technology disaster recovery services.
"The NFC depends on timely information to carry out its mission," said Charles Self, Assistant Commissioner for Information Technology Integration at GSA's Federal Technology Service. "Because the NFC is located in New Orleans, a prime severe storm and flooding area, it is particularly sensitive to the need for reliable, timely, and cost-efficient disaster recovery service. This contract will provide the technical services they need at substantial cost savings."
For over four years GSA has been providing federal agencies disaster recovery services on a subscription basis through a master agreement contract with the Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM) of FTS. This contract provides a wide range of disaster recovery services, including hot and cold site services with complete equipment and peripheral packages, network recovery services, work area recovery services, recovery plan testing, and a variety of technical support services.
Within weeks FEDSIM plans to award a new indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract for computer and communications recovery services. The request for proposals is under Project 113 at www.gsa.gov/fedcac.
NFC is using the disaster recovery contract to back up a large IBM mainframe configuration operating on more than two terabytes of stored data and to back up server IBM RS/6000's, a variety of PC/LAN configurations, and a large wide area network. The NFC disaster recovery subscription includes high volume print and mail handling recovery services, and computer output microfilm services. In addition to providing payroll and personnel processing for many federal agencies, NFC provides commercial, government, and employee payments, accounts receivable and debt management, property management, and accounting services for USDA. It also serves as the record-keeper for the governmentwide Thrift Savings Plan and the Federal Employees Retirement System.
