GSA's EXPO Classes Score with Acquisition/Procurement Professionals

Washington, D.C. -- More than 6,000 federal employees attended 180-plus hours of classroom training during the U.S. General Services Administration’s 11th Annual 2005 EXPO in San Diego this month.
Most classes were certified as Continuing Education Units, and 16-industry-only classes attracted more than 1,000 vendors.
The EXPO also attracted small businesses, which comprised 65 percent of the 605 businesses managing the EXPO’s 1,100 exhibits.
The 9,000 industry and government acquisition and procurement professionals represented the 50 U.S. states and Canada, Mexico, Korea, Israel and Iceland.
“The GSA’s EXPO was a great success again this year, because people from the acquisition community in the federal government and industry participated actively in training sessions to share best practices and lessons learned and the exhibits provided them with lots of new information about products and services available,” said GSA Administrator Stephen A. Perry. “Additionally, the annual GSA EXPO is a great place for networking among the acquisition community. It is among the premier events of its type to help develop the capability of the federal acquisition workforce to provide best value to federal agencies and U.S. taxpayers.”
Deirdre Lee, Director of Defense Procurement and Acquisition Policy for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), led the panel on "Proper Use of Non-DoD Contracts," one of the full range of courses offered during the May-3-5 GSA EXPO. Native American Sovereign Nations partnered with GSA on a course for Native Americans, and other courses included staples such as “GSA’s Smart Pay” and “Legal Aspects of Government Contracts.” GSA distributed 96,000 of its agency publications.
GSA is a centralized federal procurement, property management, and policy agency, created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. It acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services. It also plays a key role in developing and implementing government wide policies. GSA’s 12,000 associates provide services and solutions for the office operations of more than one million federal workers located in more than 8,000 government-owned and leased buildings in 2,000 U.S. communities.
