Washington, DC- General Services Administration (GSA) today announced a contract award to Equis Corporation for $9.5 million to support the 2010 Census.

This contract is a firm, fixed-price contract that will support the Census Bureau’s decennial census by providing pre- and post-award services for local census offices nationwide.  Lease awards for these facilities will begin late this year.

“GSA is proud to support this core mission function for one of our major federal customer agencies,” said David L. Winstead, Commissioner of GSA’s Public Buildings Service.  “As the workplace solutions provider for the federal civilian government, we forged a strategic partnership early in the process to meet the Census Bureau’s office needs—providing high-quality workplaces at a good value for the taxpayer.”

The awarding of this contract signifies that the earliest phase of the 2010 Census is underway.  Local census offices serve as the hub of 2010 Census activities done in communities across the country, and the contract award represents a major milestone for the Census Bureau.

This is the second time that GSA and the Census Bureau have partnered to support a decennial census.  During Census 2000, GSA provided the real estate needs, including furniture and technology to support this effort.

Equis Corporation is a Chicago-based full-service real estate firm that focuses exclusively on the business space user.  It helps clients transform their real estate holdings into distinct competitive advances creating comprehensive real-estate solutions through portfolio strategy and management, transaction advisory, corporate finance, project services, workplace integration, data management, facility management and audit and recovery services.

GSA’s mission to provide superior workplaces, expert technology solutions, acquisition services, purchasing and eGov travel solutions and management policies, at best value, allows federal agencies to focus on their core missions.

Did You Know?  GSA manages 172 million rentable square feet of space in about 7,100 locations.  GSA leases space from the private sector to meet agency housing needs when federally owned space is not available.  Leasing allows GSA to fulfill short-term requirements and react quickly to unanticipated demand.  The goal of the leasing program is to meet customers’ needs at or below market prices while maintaining low vacancy rates.
