Washington, DC 20410
A key component of the 1960s urban renewal efforts in southwest Washington, DC, the construction of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Headquarters building occurred in the post-World War II era of rapid government growth. Capitalizing on the desire to feature contemporary architectural styles in new government buildings, the HUD building was constructed in the Brutalist Style by preeminent architect Marcel Breuer.
In 2000, the building was named in honor of the first HUD Secretary and first African American member of a President’s Cabinet, Robert C. Weaver. Despite its relatively young age, the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its exceptional architectural significance.
