What Makes Volpe Unique?
The John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center was the first federal building exchange between the government and a private partner.
The former center sat on 14 acres in the Kendall Square neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The property was made up of six buildings, with a total gross floor area of 375,000 square feet. It was deemed functionally obsolete and no longer optimally supported the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) innovation mission.
A decision was made to explore a unique partnership – one where the federal government leveraged the value of the site to obtain a new facility that would optimally support the U.S. DOT’s mission needs.
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in partnership with U.S. DOT worked with an exchange partner, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to redevelop the site. The federal footprint was reduced from approximately 14 acres to 4 acres and went from six buildings to one. The Government gained a state-of-the-art facility, and MIT will now be able to redevelop the remaining property.
