GSA, the Department of Homeland Security and local utility company Eversource, have partnered in a first-of-its-kind project to bring new electric vehicle charging stations to the Thomas P. O’Neill Federal Building in Boston.

GSA awarded the contract to Orion / Voltrek on October 28, 2024 which includes nearly $550,000 in Inflation Reduction Act funding.

Through the Eversource Make Ready EV program 68 charging ports will be installed to support the government fleet. The Make Ready EV program not only provided the upfront infrastructure design work but also incentive funding in the amount of approximately $1.1 million dollars in incentive funding for infrastructure upgrades and a $30,000 rebate for EV charging stations after installation.

This project helps GSA by mitigating a significant portion of the upfront cost of upgrading the infrastructure to support EVs, which in turn provides a quicker project turnaround for the client,” stated Public Buildings Service Regional Commissioner, Glenn Rotondo. “It’s a triple win for GSA, DHS and the overall fleet electrification effort as a whole.”

The EV installation includes advanced technology to monitor and track energy consumption, aiding in better resource management for fleet vehicles.

The program is also being replicated at The John Joseph Moakley Courthouse in Boston, MA where 18 L2 ports are in the planning stages of being installed.

In 2021, an Executive Order (EO) was passed that calls for 100% of all federal fleet purchases to be zero-emission by 2035. However, providing appropriate infrastructure to support the charging of electric vehicles (EV) is a critical first step in electrifying fleets.
