New England Region Wins Green Streets Award

Cambridge Mayor Marc McGovern presenting award to GSA employees for Green Streets Initiative

GSA employees in Boston and Connecticut embraced the challenge last summer to walk, bike, or take the train to work as a way to reduce their carbon footprint. As a result, region one won first place in the greener switches, large workplaces category under the Green Streets Program.

Cambridge Mayor Marc McGovern recognized the region at the Green Street awards ceremony at the Cambridge City Hall, where new and veteran challenge participants gathered to hear a multitude of speakers.

The Walk/Ride Day Corporate Challenge, run by local non-profit Green Streets Initiative of Cambridge, MA, was held from April through October of last year.

The program’s main effort is promoting the use of active and green sustainable transportation, including walking, biking, or using public transportation. Employees were asked each month to check in, choose their federal building, and log their new method of transportation.

Overall, 91 GSA employees participated in the challenge, resulting in a 34 percent increase in cycling and three percent increase in walking during the six months, equating to 2,320 extra calories burned.
