Personal Property helps 53 American bison get back 'Home on the Range'
On Oct. 2, the Center of Expertise for Animals brought new meaning to the American Folk song ‘Home on the Range’ when Region 3 transferred 53 excess American bison from the U.S. Forestry Service in Wilmington, Illinois, to two federal programs.
The COE ensured the safety of the bison by highlighting them on the national GSA-PPM website, coordinating with associates in the Midwest on their safe passage, requiring safety assurances from prospective customers, and promoting advertisements in commercial journals.
The bison, with a total original acquisition cost of $195,888, were transferred to the USDA-Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas and to the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs reservation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. The bison are now ‘home on the range’ and able to flourish in their natural habitat.
The COE for Animals was established by the GSA Personal Property Management (GSA-PPM) program to ensure the safe and humane treatment of federally-utilized animals.
