Dedication Ceremony held for New U.S. Courthouse in Greenville

Campbell USCH Ceremony

A dedication ceremony for the new Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. U.S. Federal Courthouse was held on Monday, Oct. 17 inside the new facility in Greenville, South Carolina.

The ceremony featured comments from U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, U.S. Congressman William Timmons, Greenville Mayor Knox White, U.S. district judges, members of the Campbell Family, and Acting R4 Regional Administrator Kevin Kerns.

It is important that the Federal dollars appropriated to the Public Buildings Service directly benefit local businesses, said Kerns. “This building cost about $84 million to build, and more than half of that was spent locally.”

Kerns also said that the project met GSA’s small business subcontracting goals of approximately 30% and that more than 2,000 employees worked on the new courthouse. “The project also resulted in some benefits to the community, including upgrades to the Greenville water system and enhanced street lighting.”

This 193,000 square-foot LEED-Gold certified building houses the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Marshal Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services, and a public defender’s office.

The new courthouse is named for Carroll A. Campbell who was elected governor of South Carolina in 1986 and served two terms. Campbell’s sons, who spoke at the event, said their dad would have been proud.

“He did always have a vision of how to bring people together and that’s what he would love to see happen here is even though they’re walking into a situation that might be adversarial here at a courthouse, it’s still bringing people together and hopefully giving a just outcome to people,” said Michael Campbell.
