Located on the southwest side of the Duluth Civic Center, the Gerald W. Heaney Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse was opened Sept. 29, 1929, and renamed on May 8, 2007, after Federal Judge Gerald William Heaney, who served on the bench from 1966 to 2006. The four-story Heaney Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Duluth Civic Center Historic District.

Parking and Public 

Parking at the courthouse is limited, but public garages are available within several blocks of the building. Public transportation is also available via the Duluth Transit Authority .

Key Tenants

Along with U.S. District, Bankruptcy, and Magistrate courts, the building’s tenants include the Internal Revenue Service, Mine Safety & Health Administration, Postal Service, Railroad Retirement Board, U.S. Marshals Service, and three Department of Homeland Security offices – Customs & Border Protection, Citizenship & Immigration, and U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit.

History and Architecture

The Heaney Courthouse is an example of Neoclassical architecture with its granite and terra cotta exterior, balustrades, round-arch windows, Doric-style columns, classical cornice, and flat roof. The building is similar to Duluth’s county courthouse and city hall. The interior of the building includes marble floors, Mankato stone walls, and plaster ceilings. Many historic elements of the building – including the post office window and the elevator lobby – were restored during the lobby’s renovations in 2005 and 2011.
