Constructed as a U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in 1934, the Joseph P. Kinneary U.S. Courthouse is located along the river in downtown Columbus and named after the late District Court Judge Joseph Peter Kinneary, who served from 1966 to 2003.

Public parking and transportation

Several public parking garages and street parking meters are available near the building, and a bus stop is located two blocks east. Public transportation to the surrounding suburban areas and Columbus is provided by the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA).

Recent projects

Completed in July 2014, a project at the Kinneary Courthouse made both interior and exterior improvements and reduced energy and water consumption (see The Ohio Channel’s video news story).

Interior renovations included installation of high-efficiency water boilers, air-handling units, a building automation system, a rainwater harvesting tank, light fixtures, occupancy and daylight harvesting sensors, and low-flow water fixtures.

The exterior work repaired or replaced portions of the deteriorating sandstone façade and chimney, re-glazed the windows, and re-paneled the penthouses. Due to the courthouse’s historic nature, the project preserved the original carved stones while matching new flat stones to the existing building.

Amenities

The Kinneary Courthouse offers three conference rooms with capacities of 20 to 60 people. Each room features a conference phone, with a projector and podium available upon request. Contact Property Manager Alexandria Crank for reservations. The building also offers a cafeteria vending stand on the first floor and a federal tenant fitness center in the basement.

Key tenants

The Kinneary Courthouse is mainly occupied by the U.S. District Court and Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. The U.S. Marshals, Attorneys, Probation, and Pre-Trial Services also have offices in the courthouse.

History and architecture

The building’s Neoclassical style architecture featuring cornices, three elevations, and a massive colonnade. The façade of the building is composed mainly of granite wainscot and Berea sandstone cladding, while the windows feature Vermont marble panels and iron grill encasements, creating old world elegance. In June 2012 the Kinneary Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
