Dayton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse named for current federal judge
The Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Dayton, Ohio, has a new name. Legislation signed in December 2018 officially designated the building as the Walter H. Rice Federal Building and United States Courthouse.
A renaming event and unveiling of a sign featuring the new name will take place later this year.
The building is named for Walter Herbert Rice, a current federal judge who has served on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio since 1980.
According to the Federal Judicial Center, Judge Rice was Born in 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Northwestern University (B.A.) in 1958 and Columbia University (concurrent M.B.A. and J.D.) in 1962.
After serving in private practice, he became first assistant county prosecutor in 1969, received his first judgeship in 1970 on the Dayton Municipal Court, and joined the county Court of Common Pleas from 1971-1980.
On April 14, 1980, then-President Jimmy Carter nominated him to the federal bench, where he served as Chief Judge from 1996-2003 before assuming senior status in November 2004.
