GSA Administrator praises Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence

WASHINGTON — U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Robin Carnahan issued the following statement in support of the executive order signed by President Biden on Artificial Intelligence:

“This crucial Executive Order on AI is another important example of how the Biden-Harris Administration is leading the way in responsibly using emerging technologies to benefit the American people. Today’s action represents a comprehensive approach–grounded in key principles such as safety and privacy–to ensure that we can leverage AI to help government deliver better for the people we serve, while mitigating its risks.”

“GSA is proud to play key roles in supporting this Executive Order to help ensure the federal government leads the way in the responsible, effective use of AI. For example, through today’s actions, GSA is calling more tech talent to public service through the National AI Talent Surge. We hope to attract many more AI experts to consider working at places like GSA and our Technology Transformation Services as well as through the governmentwide tech programs we coordinate.”

“Opportunities are opening up at the new AI.gov for everyone from early-career professionals who can apply to join our U.S. Digital Corps to more seasoned experts who can apply to serve as Presidential Innovation Fellows working closely with top leaders across government. We’re looking for talent to help us leverage AI across government as well as to build capacity in key areas such as AI regulation and R&D.”

Ann Lewis, director of GSA’s Technology Transformation Services (TTS), added:

“We are excited to support this executive order as it is taking important steps to promote the powerful and responsible use of AI in GSA’s programs and across the federal government. Through the EO, we will build on GSA’s work in AI, including our AI Center of Excellence which will continue to work with agencies to help them understand and responsibly implement AI to support a great digital experience for the public.”

“Our FedRAMP program, which ensures cloud services used by the government are secure, will establish strategies to ensure that cloud-based AI products are prioritized into the authorization path so that agencies have the tools they need to more effectively serve the public.”

“I look forward to serving on the AI and Technology Talent Task Force to accelerate the hiring of more tech talent in AI across government.”
