GSA launches Space Match to help federal workers find available office space

New tool helping employees return to the office with convenient shared workspace solutions

WASHINGTON — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) today announced the launch of Space Match, an innovative program designed to help federal agencies find available office space.

Space Match connects federal agencies in need of workspace with those that have extra seats available, fostering collaboration, reducing costs, and supporting increased occupancy rates required by the Office of Management and Budget and Congress [PDF].

“Space Match is a game-changer for federal agencies navigating the evolving office landscape,” said Public Buildings Service Commissioner Michael Peters. “By leveraging shared office space, we are optimizing real estate usage, reducing overhead costs, and providing employees with more flexible work arrangements.”

Benefits of Space Match

  • Convenient workspaces: Helps federal agencies find available office space for their employees returning to in-person work.
  • Rent savings: Helps agencies reduce rent costs by optimizing underutilized office space.
  • Government-wide collaboration: Agencies like the Department of Labor (DOL), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) are actively exploring Space Match’s potential to create more flexible and efficient real estate portfolios.

GSA is committed to identifying underutilized space nationwide and filling it with federal employees who need it. Space Match is growing rapidly, with GSA collaborating with key stakeholders across the federal government to support customer needs. As the program evolves, GSA will continue to provide updates and insights on its progress.

“This program supports the shift from agency-specific space to government-wide utilization standards,” said Ryan Brill, Design Lead at the United States Air Force. “Unlike traditional procurement, Space Match eliminates costly buildouts, redesigns, and long processes. As more federal employees return to the office, it helps agencies make the most of their existing real estate.”
