SUBJECT: Succession to Inspector General Position Under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act

  1. Purpose. This document designates certain officials as first assistants to the position of Inspector General for purposes of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, 5 U.S.C. §§ 3345-3349d (the Act). The Act governs succession in the event the Inspector General dies, resigns, or is otherwise unable to perform the functions and duties of the Office, pending the nomination and confirmation by the President of a permanent successor. This document also provides guidance to OIG components on complying with the legal and reporting requirements under the Act.
  2. Cancellation. OIG 5450.1F is canceled.
  3. Nature of revision. This revision updates the Designation of First Assistants to the Position of Inspector General and the OIG Procedures for Compliance with Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
