We play a vital role in support of federal agencies as well as state, local and tribal governments in emergency response activities. We take an all hazards approach in planning for natural disasters, technological emergencies, terrorism consequences, resource shortages and other disorders. For additional information on our resources, please refer to the Emergency Response page.
In the event of an emergency, federal employees should follow their own agency’s emergency procedures and monitor media announcements to obtain disaster or emergency-related information. While we are responsible for opening and closing federal office buildings where agencies are located, tenant agencies make their own decisions regarding their operating status. Local Federal Executive Boards/Associations are good resources of information operating status recommendations.
For individual, family, and community preparedness tips, please refer to ready.gov.
In an emergency, such as an earthquake, hurricane or severe weather outbreak, we provide support under the terms of the National Response Framework – such as buildings and space, supplies, tools and equipment, telecommunications and information technology and transportation services.
As a national priority and as mandated through Presidential Directive, all federal agencies should have emergency preparedness plans and Continuity Plans. Continuity planning is intended to ensure continuity of essential federal functions under all circumstances as outlined by FEMA.
Agencies occupying our owned and leased buildings should coordinate their alternate work site designation and continuity of operations contact information with their agency headquarters, which will provide that to our Office of Mission Assurance.
During emergencies and disasters, over a million federal workers and their agencies rely on us to continue delivering expert solutions, acquisition services, and superior workplaces, while the public counts on our customer agencies to continue delivering their services as well. Continuity planning is essential to maintaining this service delivery.
