GSA awards design-build contract for new Fort Lauderdale Courthouse
ATLANTA — Today, the U.S. General Services Administration is pleased to announce the award of over $196 million in funding for a new 252,000 gross-square-foot courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. GSA has awarded the design-build contract to Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama.
The courthouse will provide replacement space for the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida; U.S. Marshals Service; and other court-related tenants currently housed in the existing courthouse.
“This is a great opportunity to build a modern, efficient courthouse that meets the needs of the Judiciary in Fort Lauderdale,” stated GSA Regional Administrator Jason Shelton. “We are pleased to make this award and get started on bringing this facility to reality.”
Funding was initially appropriated for the project in fiscal year 2018. Additional funding for the project was received in the fiscal year 2023 Omnibus, allowing for the award of the design-build contract.
“I’m excited to hear that the project to build a new federal courthouse is about to get underway. This is long overdue for our community as the current facility no longer meets the needs of today’s court system,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis.
“The new courthouse will be another gem in our growing and increasingly cosmopolitan downtown. I would like to thank the members of Congress, their staffs, our local judiciary, community leaders and the General Services Administration for the years of hard work that they put into bringing this moment to reality. It was not an easy undertaking to obtain the necessary commitments and financing, but they persevered, and we look forward to seeing the fruits of this labor.”
GSA expects design and construction of the new courthouse to take four years to complete, with estimated substantial completion in fall 2026.
