GSA to host public hearing for Land Port of Entry expansion in Grand Portage
GRAND PORTAGE, Minn. – In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the U.S. General Services Administration will host a public hearing in support of the findings of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement to address the expansion and modernization of the Land Port of Entry project planned in Grand Portage, Minnesota.
What: Draft Environmental Impact Statement Public Meeting.
When: Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5-7 p.m. CT.
Where: Grand Portage Welcome Center, 9393 E, MN-61, Grand Portage, Minnesota, or virtually.
Who: General public.
The existing facility in Grand Portage serves as the port of entry for travelers crossing the Pigeon River International Bridge that connects the town of Neebing, Ontario, Canada, with Grand Portage, Minnesota. The federal government currently inspects non-commercial and commercial vehicles, as well as pedestrians and bicyclists, at the land port. The expansion project will provide for five vehicle traffic lanes and companion inspection booths, improving inspection officer safety and security while enabling the government to process border traffic more efficiently. The new, modern and energy-efficient facility will meet the federal government’s current land port mission requirements.
GSA is hosting this public meeting to provide the local community information about the project. This meeting is part of the environmental review public involvement process intended to help inform the public of the findings of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. GSA welcomes public input on the draft statement as well as other issues that are important to the community surrounding the planned construction work.
The in-person meeting will begin with an open house format from 5-5:30 p.m. CT. The hybrid in-person and virtual meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. CT, with a presentation of the project and the environmental review process, followed by a public comment session, in which both in-person and virtual attendees may participate. Afterward, there will be an open house for in-person participants until 7 p.m. CT.
In the event of inclement weather, the meeting may only be held virtually or will be broadcast from the Grand Portage State Park Welcome Center. If the meeting is broadcast from the Grand Portage State Park Welcome Center, a GSA representative will be available (in-person and virtually) to assist the public in providing comments via the virtual platform. Check the GSA project website for updates in the days leading up to the meeting to determine if the meeting will be held in-person, virtually, or will be broadcast from the Grand Portage State Park Welcome Center.
Members of the public may also submit written comments via email to michael.gonczar@gsa.gov. Comments must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, and include “Grand Portage LPOE EIS” in the email subject line.
