REPLACING LOOSE, BROKEN OR MISSING INDIVIDUAL QUARRY TILES
PART 1–GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A. This procedure includes guidance on replacing individual quarry tiles that are loose, broken or missing.

These guidelines should be reviewed prior to performing this procedure and should be followed, when applicable, along with recommendations from the Regional Historic Preservation Officer (RHPO).

2.02 MATERIALS
A. Replacement quarry tile matching historic tile in color, size, and other characteristics: 6” x 9” x 1/2” (American Olean Tile, Boston Valley Tile, Ludowici), or approved equal.
B. Solvent cleaner such as “Sure Klean Asphalt and Tar Remover” (ProSoCo, Inc.)
C. Dry-set mortar: Medium-textured portland cement-based (Southern Grouts and Mortars,Inc.)
D. Portland cement: ASTM C150, Type I, grey
E. Sand (color to match existing mortar) should conform to the following size gradations:

2.04 MIXES
NOTE: PROPORTIONS SHOULD BE MEASURED BY VOLUME.
A. Mortar Mix: Comply with ASTM C 270.
1. 1 part portland cement
2. 3 parts sand
3. 2 parts gravel
4. enough water to form a thick, workable mix
B. Grout Mix:
1. 1 part dry-set mortar
2. enough water to form a thick, workable mix
PART 3–EXECUTION
3.01 ERECTION, INSTALLATION, APPLICATION
A. Mix grout and mortar for 3-5 minutes using a mechanical batcher (see mixes in Section 2.04 above).
NOTE: MIX ONLY ENOUGH MORTAR OR GROUT TO BE USED WITHIN 2 HOURS OF FINAL MIXING. DO NOT RETEMPER OR USE PARTIALLY HARDENED MATERIALS.
B. Remove damaged tiles using a chisel. Take care not to damaged adjacent tiles.
C. Using a putty knife, scrape off old adhesive from floor.
D. Remove loose dirt from area using a stiff bristle brush.
E. Trowel on a layer of mortar.
F. Set tile and gently press into place. Wipe excess mortar immediately from the surface.
G. Allow the mortar to cure for 16-24 hours.
H. When the tile is firmly set, press grout into the joints, filling them flush with the surface. Tool so that joints are slightly concave.
I. Wipe excess grout immediately from the surface.
J. Keep masonry damp for a minimum of 48 hours or until mortar is fully cured.
